FOOTBALL: A former miners' union leader got a birthday surprise on Saturday when Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson rang to wish him a happy 70th.
United fan Howard Davies, a former NUM official at Blaenant colliery, was told he was speaking to "Alex."
But he had no idea it was the United boss until after he hung up. Peter Hain MP, who arranged the call - Davies used to be his political agent - rang back to explain.
