Boxing: Boxing promoter Barry Hearn has ramped up the pressure on the sport’s authorities to block any attempts to stage a fight between David Haye and Dereck Chisora in England.
Hearn wants the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) to prevent the fighters from facing each other in the ring after their much-publicised Munich brawl brought the sport into disrepute.
Haye is currently retired and Chisora had his licence suspended by the BBBoC after the pair clashed at the press conference following Chisora’s defeat to Vitali Klitschko in Germany in February.
But speculation that promoter Frank Warren will announce a clash between the pair at a press conference on Tuesday has provoked an angry response from Hearn.
He said: “We really can’t encourage and condone the behaviour of those two fighters by allowing them to come to England and make a lot of money.
“I’m looking to the British Boxing Board of Control to exercise the authority they have. Who knows (if the fight will happen) but at the end of the day perhaps the power of the pound note speaks.”
However Warren believes that the contest would make a “natural fight” and insisted that the bout could be on the cards.
“It’s a bigger fight than either of them fighting Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko,” he said.
And Chisora, whose appeal against his suspension is set to be heard on May 14, is keen to resume his career.
He said: “I’m a boxer, I’m a fighter. I love fighting. Someone takes something you love, how are you gonna survive and progress in your life? I wanna fight again.”
Asked if he wanted to fight Haye in particular, he added: “I want to fight everybody.”
