BELARUS said yesterday that it regretted US President George W Bush's decision to sign a law that slaps economic sanctions on the ex-Soviet republic, calling it an "unfriendly step."
The US Belarus Democracy Act calls for the promotion of democracy in the country by supplying aid to non-government organisations, helping to establish an independent media and forbidding US federal agencies from extending any financial aid to Belarus.
Mr Bush signed it into law on Wednesday.
