Tory mayor of Barnet Hugh Rayner under pressure to resign over alleged 'illegal' treatment of housing benefit tenants

Pressure is mounting for Barnet’s Tory mayor to resign after allegations emerged of his “illegal” treatment of tenants on housing benefit in properties he owns.

Labour GLA member Andrew Dismore yesterday presented a formal complaint to Barnet Council’s monitoring officer over the conduct of mayor Hugh Rayner.

Mr Rayner is accused of a litany of bad practices as a landlord, among them drafting 12 month contracts that permits him to hike rents at any time and amount throughout the year.

He is said to have charged well over the market rate for six out of every seven of his tenants in receipt of housing benefit.
