POA Conference: Officer slams lack of support

A PRISON officer spoke about the “dangerous” lack of support provided when she is deployed to other institutions to fill in chronic staff gaps.

Jackie Bates, who works at HMP Buckley Hall, addressed the Prison Officers Association conference to describe the “shambolic” procedure of detached duty.

In her experience, no inductions are given to prison officers on temporary shifts.

Overnight accommodation was booked for Ms Bates around 40 miles away from where her shift was based on at least one occasion.

Overcrowded prisons have long experienced poor staffing levels due insufficient pay, extremely taxing work and hazardous conditions.
