MARK SERWOTKA issued a rallying cry against austerity at his union’s annual conference yesterday — although it had to be read out for him as he was absent due to ill health.
The civil servants’ union PCS leader said the Con-Dem government is using austerity “to cover up a vicious assault on public services.”
And he urged members to support continuing talks with the Unite union over a merger.
“It could create a new force in the public sector and lead to a greater fight back against austerity,” he said.
Mr Serwotka also told members he expects to be “back in a few months” following heart surgery that will lead to a transplant “in due course.”
His message was ready out by PCS president Janice Goodrich as she opened the union’s national conference in Brighton.
Ahead of three days of debate, she told the Tories the union would take “no lessons” on democracy from them and their attack on the right to strike.
