Campaign: Get behind Britain’s anti-austerity daily

Star campaigns organiser DAVID PEEL issues a rallying cry for us all to get behind Britain’s anti-austerity daily

Across Britain, people are waking up to why the Morning Star is a vital part of our national life.

Following the People’s Assembly Against Austerity demonstration which attracted 50,000, it has became painfully evident that few national newspapers reported it.

Worse, the national broadcaster BBC News ignored it completely, claiming disingenuously that there were competing national and international stories which took precedence, an issue which did not concern ITN, Channel 4 News and Sky, who covered it.

Following hundreds of complaints, the BBC eventually posted a few seconds of film of it online. It was a disgrace.

The only national daily newspaper which gave the demonstration pages and pages of coverage, before and after the march, was the Morning Star.

It is the same story — day in and day out, six days a week — with many other issues which affect millions of ordinary people.

But this great newspaper of the left has become like some of the frayed and battered long boats and barges moored near to its offices on the River Lea.

It needs an overhaul and cannot do it without your help.

One thing is for sure. If this newspaper went under after 85 years of struggle, the rich and their friends in the media and government, grown fat off the backs of the people the Morning Star speaks for, will open the champagne and laugh.

The joke will be on us, and they will be right to celebrate.

A lone voice for the poor, the vulnerable and everyone suffering austerity would have been silenced. A light that has shone on corporate and individual greed, and exposed corruption, race hatred, division and war would have gone out.

We would all be the losers.

Now is the time to support the Morning Star as the struggle against austerity begins to take off. Now, when up to two million workers are preparing to strike. Now, when the criminal swindlers  and liars in the government are looking for re-election.

This will be the only daily newspaper in Britain backing and inspiring the strikers and anti-austerity campaigners. The rest of the media will shift into attack mode and tear into the trade unions, our friends and our neighbours as they take a stand and fight back.

If you support the Morning Star and want it to remain, send us a picture of yourself and in 100 words tell us why. We want to publish both.

Then, if you can, please send us a donation.

Give as much as you are able and give this great socialist newspaper a viable future.
