Northern Rail workers walk out over company's refusal to talk

WORKERS at Northern Rail will walk out tomorrow following the company’s decision to halt negotiations with rail union RMT.

The union said Northern Rail had decided to “collapse” talks arbitrated through conciliation service Acas that sought to resolve the ongoing dispute between workers and management.

The dispute, which has stretched across the country over the past two years, is related to company plans to introduce driver-only operations.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “In spite of the collapse of this week’s talks at Acas, RMT will not be deterred in its efforts and will continue to campaign both industrially and politically to ensure passengers using Arriva Rail North Train Services are afforded the respect they deserve and are provided with a continued and guaranteed safe, secure and accessible railway.

“The issue at the heart of the dispute remains the same — a safe, accessible and secure railway ‎for all and we thank the travelling public for their continued support for the RMT campaign.”

Union members are set to strike every Saturday until October 20.
