Activists challenge MPs who take oil money out of politics

CLIMATE campaigners unfurled a huge banner bearing the words “stop polluting politics” from Westminster Bridge today.

The stunt, which took place as MPs returned to Parliament after Easter, was part of a new campaign to end the fossil fuel lobby’s influence on British politics.

Stop Polluting Politics challenges MPs to reject donations from high-polluting industries, arguing that fossil fuel lobbying is leading politicians to abandon climate policies.

The Conservative Party, which has handed out over 100 new oil and gas licences in the North Sea, accepted £3.5 million from polluters, fossil fuel companies and climate deniers in 2022, campaigners say.

Campaign spokesman Sam Simons said: “Instead of stepping in to take action, our leaders let the fossil fuel industry fill their pockets and erode their promises.

“Every penny they take from polluters betrays our trust.

“We demand that our politicians put a stop to this toxic influence and make their loyalties clear: do they work for us? Or do they work for big oil?”
