LIVERPOOL EXHIBITION

Life In Motion: Egon Schiele/Francesca Woodman
Tate
Albert Dock
Until September 23

Like his radical protege, photographer Francesca Woodman, Egon Schiele (1890–1918) is known for his intimate and unapologetic portraits, which look beneath the surface to capture the subjects’ emotions. But there's a difference in execution. Schiele uses quick marks and sharp lines to portray the energy of his models, while Woodman used long exposures to create a blurred image (pictured) — surreal, humorous and at times painfully honest — that captures extended moments in time. The exhibition is a close encounter between these two exceptional artists ands promises to be an intense viewing experience.

Chic Murray: Funny Place for a Window
The Lemon Tree
West North Street
May 26

“Comedian’s Comedian” Chic Murray passed away in 1985 but before popping his clogs he'd had a career that had taken him from an engineer’s apprenticeship in Greenock to the top of the bill at The London Palladium. Stuart Hepburn's play takes us through his last day on earth, in a musical look back at the ups and downs, triumphs and tragedies of his glittering but tragically flawed career. Seriously funny stuff promised.

BIRMINGHAM PHOTOGRAPHY

Miss Black and Beautiful
MAC
Cannon Hill Park
Until July 1

For three decades, from the late 1960s on, the late Raphael Albert organised and documented numerous black British beauty pageants and competitions as well as cultural events. Many celebrated the global “Black is Beautiful” aesthetic of the 1970s in a local west London context —paired with the obligatory bathing costumes and high heels, Albert’s contestants often sported large Afro hairstyles, articulating a particular and multifaceted black femininity as part of a widely contested and ambiguous cultural performance. According to the exhibition's organisers, ABP and MAC, his photographs are a testament to a profound moment of self-articulation and collective celebration in London’s pan Afro-Caribbean communities and beyond.
