Morocco slams ‘completely unjustified’ decision by Algeria to cut off relations

MOROCCO said today that Algeria’s decision to break off diplomatic relations is “completely unjustified” as tension between the north African neighbours intensified.

Algiers broke off ties on Tuesday, claiming Rabat has undertaken various hostile acts against it, including sponsoring “terrorists” it blames for starting wildfires that have killed at least 90 people over the last month.

Algeria has also been investigating “massive and systematic acts of espionage” by Morocco, following reports that the kingdom’s security services used Israeli-made Pegasus spyware to snoop on Algerian officials. Morocco in turn accuses Algeria of backing the independence movement in Western Sahara, which it occupies.

While most scientists say this summer’s devastating wildfires, which have raged with unusual ferocity in countries including the United States, Greece, Turkey and Russia, are indications of climate chaos due to global warming, several governments, including those in Greece and Turkey, have sought to blame political opponents.
