THE wall-to-wall BBC coverage of Prince Philip’s death has become the most objected-to moment in British television history, with more than 100,000 complaints received.
Viewers contacted the broadcaster in unprecedented numbers to express their displeasure after the BBC cleared radio and TV schedules to cover the duke’s demise. He died on Friday at Windsor Castle at the age of 99.
The volume of complaints was so high that a dedicated webpage was set up for viewers to submit them.
It has now reportedly received at least 110,994 complaints — one of the strongest negative reactions to British television ever seen.
The previous record is believed to have been set after the BBC screened Jerry Springer: The Musical in 2005, sparking 63,000 complaints.
A BBC spokesperson said: “We are proud of our coverage and the role we play during moments of national significance.”
