Climate anxiety at all-time high, poll finds

CLIMATE anxiety is at an all-time high across Britain, according to a poll.

A YouGov survey, published as the Cop26 summit entered its eleventh day, shows more than 40 per cent of the population considers the climate crisis to be in the top three issues facing the country.

Anxiety about the state of the planet comes only behind the economy and health.

The number of people worried by climate change has been climbing since 2018, and was further boosted by Extinction Rebellion protests in 2019.

Prior to this, climate change was rarely a top priority for more than 10 per cent of the public, but this has grown with rising awareness in the run-up to Cop26.

Young people ranked the climate as their top priority, but every age group recognised the urgency involved in fighting the climate emergency, YouGov said.

Anthony Wells, director of YouGov’s political and social opinion polling, said this was almost certainly due to the impact of Cop26 on public awareness — but whether climate change continues to be such a high priority once the conference moves on remains to be seen.
