DANIEL KEBEDE is set to become the general secretary of the National Education Union (NEU) after winning a ballot of members, the union confirmed today.
The qualified primary school teacher will become the first sole leader of the NEU when he replaces joint general secretaries Dr Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney on September 1.
In a joint statement, they offered their “warm congratulations” to Mr Kebede, who was the union’s national president between 2021 and 2022.
They added: “It is an honour to lead and serve NEU members and we know that Daniel will continue the union’s work to give a voice to the profession and campaign for the world-class education system our children deserve.”
The leaders offered their commiserations to runner-up Niamh Sweeney, who polled 12,918 votes to Mr Kebede’s 28,636.
“Daniel will be fortunate to work alongside Niamh in her role as our first elected deputy general secretary,” they added.
The incoming general secretary has a law degree from the University of Wales and won the prestigious Blair Peach Award in 2017 for outstanding contributions to social justice.
