DEVOLVING the crown estate to Wales could help the country become a “world leader” in renewable energy, Wales First Minister Mark Drakeford said today.
Mr Drakford stressed the move, granted to Scotland in 2016, would help Wales reach net-zero carbon emissions as quickly as possible.
The estate, a business which represents lands and holdings belonging to the monarchy, holds rights to seabeds around the British Isles.
Relinquishing control would allow Wales to make the most of its potential for wind and wave power, Mr Drakeford pointed out.
He told the Guardian newspaper: “Wales’s big contribution to a carbon-neutral future is to use the natural assets we have to be at the forefront of renewable energy production.
“Geography is on our side. If you’re on the west side of the UK, you have the prevailing winds. We are surrounded on three sides by water.
“The Scottish government has levers it is able to use that are not directly available to us. In Scotland, it’s a direct tool the government is able to deploy.”
