MINISTERS have no plans to require university students to be fully vaccinated to attend lectures, the government has said.
Education Minister Vicky Ford and Downing Street failed to rule out making it compulsory for students to be double jabbed earlier this week.
And Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab had said a decision on the move would be made in September.
But now the government appears to have rolled back on the plan, which would also have prevented unvaccinated students from living in halls of residence.
A Department for Education spokeswoman said the government “strongly encourage all students to take up the offer of both vaccine doses.”
“The government currently has no plans to require the use of the NHS Covid pass for access to learning.
“However, universities and FE colleges are encouraged to promote the offer of the vaccine and should continue to conduct risk assessments for their particular circumstances.”
Both the University & College Union and the National Union of Students had been critical of making vaccines mandatory for students.
The former called it hugely discriminatory and the latter said it was an appalling idea.
