Government accused of seeking to hire a ‘union buster’ to attack rail unions

THE government has been accused of seeking to hire a “union buster” to attack rail workers’ unions, their pay, jobs and pensions.

RMT hit out at the Department for Transport (DfT) today after posting an ad for the part-time job of “rail pensions and workforce director” — a post the rail union says will lead to an attack on workers and their unions.

The advert says the £93,000 pro-rata job will include developing “policies which will shape and define the future of pensions and workforce in the rail sector.”

The successful candidate will also help develop “a newly formed team of circa 15 people which will bring together and strengthen the department’s expertise on rail workforce, industrial relations and pensions policy.”

It goes on to say that the director will “play an important and influential role” within the department and acknowledges that they will be working in a “politically sensitive environment.”

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “RMT has been warning that the government and the employers would be gearing up for a post-Covid assault on our members across the transport sector, and here they are headhunting a dedicated hitman or woman.

“It would be a scandal if the essential transport workers who have kept key staff and freight moving throughout the pandemic were rewarded with a kick in the teeth on jobs, pay and pensions. RMT will fight any such attack.”

The Department for Transport has been approached for comment.
