Inquest into death of black man in police custody begins

AN INQUEST has opened into a black man’s death in police custody in West Yorkshire in 2016.

Andrew Hall, 43, from Huddersfield, was arrested after becoming physically ill at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary on September 13 that year.

While being restrained by police at Huddersfield police station, Mr Hall’s condition deteriorated and he was taken back to hospital, where he died.

The inquest into his death is being held in Bradford and is expected to last seven weeks.

His family is being assisted by Inquest, which provides legal assistance to bereaved families.

Mr Hall’s partner Natalie Dyer said: “As a family, we want justice for Andrew and we want the truth to be uncovered and for no family to suffer as we have.

“We cannot comprehend how or why this happened to Andrew and hope that we get our questions answered during the inquest process.”

Mr Hall’s family said they hope that the inquest will thoroughly examine whether he received adequate care during his first admission to the infirmary, whether the police response was necessary and proportionate, whether restraint contributed to his death and, ultimately, whether his race was a factor.
