Johnson’s form of Trumpism cannot be allowed, warns Dawn Butler after being forced to leave Parliament

The Labour MP for Brent Central was told to withdraw from the chamber for calling the Prime Minister a liar

BORIS JOHNSON’S form of “Trumpism” cannot be allowed to take over Britain, Dawn Butler warned today after she was removed from Parliament for calling the Prime Minister a liar.

The Labour MP for Brent Central was told to withdraw from the chamber by temporary deputy speaker Judith Cummins following her remarks on Thursday.

Under parliamentary rules of etiquette, MPs are not allowed to accuse each other of lying in the House of Commons.

In a video posted on her Twitter after she was thrown out of Parliament, Ms Butler said: “But he is a liar.

“He lied to the house and the country over and over again. I had enough and had to call it out.”

Speaking to LBC today, Ms Butler said: “Let’s all follow the rules. Prime Minister, you come to Parliament and deliver statements in Parliament, instead of going to your mates in the press, in the media, delivering it there and then politicians are secondary.

“We are not secondary, we are elected politicians, we are elected to serve our constituents in Parliament, but this government has tried to thwart that every step of the way.

“It tried to close down Parliament, given themselves Henry VIII powers — democracy doesn’t matter to them.

“Politicians on all sides of the house should actually stand with me on this and say this isn’t our democracy, we are fighting to take back control.”

When asked if she had received any “words of support” from Conservative MPs, Ms Butler said: “It’s really interesting. When it’s a fight for democracy, no matter what side of the spectrum you’re on you kind of meet in the middle.

“When it’s a fight for our freedoms, our rights, democracy, the rule of law, it’s fundamentally British. And we are fighting for that together no matter what side of the house we sit on.

“If we allow the Prime Minister to do this now, who knows who will follow him or what will happen next. We can’t allow that sort of Trumpism to take over Britain — we just can’t have it.”

Ms Butler received support from other MPs, including Claudia Webbe who tweeted: “Boris Johnson is a liar.”

Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner said: “Just to confirm Boris Johnson is a liar regardless of who calls him a liar or where they call him a liar.”
