Kill the Bill: Thousands take the streets to protest over the weekend

THOUSANDS took the streets at the weekend in towns and cities across the country to oppose new legislation to crack down on protest.

Protesters marched from Hyde Park in London on Saturday to Parliament Square, holding placards reading “Kill the Bill” to show their opposition to the proposed new law.

A group of around 100 protesters also marched from College Green in Bristol, where recent demos against the policing Bill saw riot officers violently disperse crowds and dozens arrested.

Police said no arrests had been made on Saturday during the protests, which also took place over the weekend in Cardiff, Newcastle and Sheffield.

In Brighton, crowds occupied the city centre by sitting on the roads and blocking traffic before marching to a police station.

The proposed legislation would give police in England and Wales more powers to impose restrictions on non-violent protest. It has already passed its first stage in the Commons and will return to Parliament after the Queen’s Speech.
