LABOUR MP Barry Gardiner will join workers in a demonstration against the fire-and-rehire tactics of shoe giant Clarks at its head office in Street, Somerset, on Monday.
The Unite union has warned that its 200 members at the chain are considering strike action after being told that they were to be dismissed and re-engaged on inferior conditions.
Clarks, taken over by Hong Kong private equity firm LionRock Capital earlier this year, is attempting to impose cuts in overtime, call-out and sick pay, as well as parental leave and redundancy terms.
Unite said that it would work with sister union Community, which also represents warehouse staff, to stop the fire-and-rehire attack, including co-ordination of strike action.
Unite regional officer Gareth Lowe said: “Our members, as well as their warehouse colleagues in the Community union, will not stand for Clarks attempts to slash their terms and conditions.”
Mr Gardiner, whose parliamentary bid to outlaw the practice has been backed by Unite, said: “I have been really encouraged by the support I have received from MPs from every party and every corner of the country.”
