Labour pays tribute to former Dundee MP Ernie Ross

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Labour MP for Dundee who died at the weekend aged 79.

Ernie Ross, who represented Dundee West between 1979 and 2005, died in the city on Sunday.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar paid tribute, saying that Mr Ross was a “passionate voice against injustice, not just in Dundee but across the world.”

Mr Sarwar said: “Whether campaigning to save the local dental hospital or for human rights abroad, he knew the importance of using the privilege afforded to him by politics to stand up for those who could not stand up for themselves.

“Across the parliament and the Labour Party he was a trusted confidante, adviser and friend.”

The former Dundee MP was known for, among other achievements, being key to the twinning of the city and the West Bank settlement of Nablus in 1980.

Former Labour leader and MP Jeremy Corbyn shared his sympathies with Mr Ross’s family.

He wrote on Twitter: “Ernie Ross was a passionate advocate for social justice, public services and human rights internationally, including the rights of the Palestinian people.”
