North Ayrshire Council cancel screening of Corbyn film

A SCREENING of the film Oh Jeremy Corbyn: The Big Lie turned into yet another big cancellation when North Ayrshire Council imposed a ban just hours before it was due to begin.

Ayrshire Morning Star Readers and Supporters Group had arranged the showing of the film at Irvine’s Harbour Arts Centre (HAC), recently threatened with closure by the SNP-led council.

However, dozens of people were left furious on Wednesday night when the council barred the use of HAC to show the film, which outlines how the Labour Party and the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn were both undermined by claims of anti-semitism.

Campaign Against Anti-semitism (CAA), an organisation which led attacks on Mr Corbyn and has repeatedly been the subject of complaints to the Charity Commission that it has strayed into politics, admitted responsibility on its website, saying: “Following correspondence with CAA, North Ayrshire Council has cancelled a screening of a propaganda film about the anti-semitic former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.”

The statement goes on boast that CAA complaints have resulted in the film being cancelled by numerous organisations across Britain, adding: “CAA’s Antisemitism Barometer 2019 showed that anti-semitism on the far left of British politics has surpassed that of the far right.”

Screening organiser Arthur West told the Star: “The venue was sold out. Sixty people were down to attend and we only found out that it was being cancelled at 4.30pm, so we couldn’t even let everyone know.

“Thirty people turned up and many of them have now contacted the council demanding answers.”

A council spokesperson said: “Having received a complaint regarding the proposed screening of this film, we decided it would not go ahead on Wednesday evening as a precautionary measure while we undertake a review.

“We would like to offer an apology to those who turned up and were unaware of the late decision.”
