Nowak defends decision to allow Sun reporter into TUC Congress

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak has defended the decision to provide a Sun journalist press accreditation for this year’s Congress.

The Communication Workers Union had tweeted that it was “bitterly disappointed to hear that The S*n newspaper were given accreditation” as the conference in Liverpool drew to a close.

Mr Nowak told delegates today that this was in line with current policy but he would be “more than happy to review” this in consultation with the NUJ, adding that he has previously made public his refusal to engage with the right-wing tabloid.

A TUC spokesman said: “One Sun journalist was accredited for Congress. That journalist did not attend Congress.

“In line with policy from the National Union of Journalists, we don't have standing policy to refuse accreditation to journalists.

“That’s been the case for successive Congresses. The TUC general secretary does not do interviews with the Sun, nor take questions from the Sun.

“The TUC does not provide content to the Sun. We will never forget the 97. This city will never forget the 97. The TUC will never forget the 97.”
