People of wales want a national care service, Unison says

PEOPLE in Wales overwhelmingly want the Welsh government to create a national care service for elderly, disabled and vulnerable people, a poll by public service union Unison showed today.

The poll found that 72 per cent of people in Wales want the service — and 90 per cent say care workers deserve a pay increase.

Unison said a national care service should be a priority in elections to the Welsh Senedd on May 6.

The union warned that care services are “in crisis” due to the Covid-19 pandemic, affecting care recipients and workers alike.

Care worker Pat Jones said: “Covid revealed to people for the first time how many carer workers struggle with in-work poverty because of the very low wages paid.”

Unison Cymru Wales regional secretary Karen Loughlin called for a “complete overhaul” of the Wales care sector.

“Unison is calling for a national care service for Wales which puts dignity and respect for clients and staff at its heart,” she said.
