PRISON officers expressed their solidarity with the people of Ukraine today amid Russia’s ongoing attack on the country.
Delegates at the Prison Officers Association (POA) annual conference in Eastbourne overwhelmingly backed a motion which “recognises the Ukrainian people in their struggle to maintain their sovereign state and live in a democratic society.”
The proposition, moved by the union’s national executive council, said that the humanitarian crisis that followed the start of the widely condemned invasion on February 24 was “caused by the Russian state.”
POA national vice-chairman Dave Todd said: “We’ve all seen the news, the horrors every day.
“It breaks your heart — and if it doesn’t, you’re not human.”
He highlighted Wednesday’s Justice for Colombia fringe meeting as an example of how the union should be “more international and more caring of people who are suffering” overseas.
Most members praised the motion, but some urged the union to also speak out on other global conflicts, including in Palestine.
