Sharon Graham launches Unite leadership bid

SHARON GRAHAM published a manifesto for change on Tuesday night as she launched her campaign to be Unite’s first female general secretary.

Speaking online to almost 400 of the union’s front-line reps, Ms Graham said it was time for Unite “to get back to the workplace” and build the union there “as never before.”

Fellow assistant general secretaries Steve Turner, who is backed by the union’s United Left, and Howard Beckett are also bidding to succeed Len McCluskey, who is stepping down after 11 years at the helm.

A fourth candidate, Gerard Coyne, is considered the right-wing choice.

Ms Graham said: “This [manifesto] is about ensuring we defend workers and transparency at the heart of our union.

“From pledging a shop stewards’ parliament so that our structures return Unite to the issues of jobs and pay, to restoring Unite’s presence in the Republic of Ireland, our plan for [the union’s] future is rooted in the needs of members.”

Each candidate will need a minimum of 174 branch nominations to enter this summer’s ballot, with a result expected on August 26.
