TUC 21 Starmer to unveil Labour pledge of ‘new deal for workers’ at conference

SIR KEIR STARMER will pitch his take on the “new deal for workers” TUC campaign with full rights and protections from day one in a job at Congress today.

In his keynote speech to delegates at the online event, the Labour leader will commit the party to “making sure workers are paid properly, not taxed unfairly” if elected.

Sir Keir is set to pledge measures to “reflect the reality of modern working,” including a £10-an-hour minimum wage, holiday pay, parental leave, unfair dismissal protection from the first day in a new contract and the right to work flexibly.

A Labour government would also ban fire-and-rehire attacks on workers and outlaw zero-hours contracts, he is expected to say.

The proposals will benefit working families, with one in nine in insecure work, Sir Keir is due to stress, adding the minimum wage increase would mean a £2,500 pay rise for many social care workers.

The Labour leader is also expected to warn working people of the Tories’ “double whammy” of impending universal credit cuts and national insurance contribution rises.

“Under the Conservatives’ unfair plans, working families across the country don’t get a pay rise but will get a tax rise,” he is set to say.

“Ensuring good-quality secure work, underpinned with employment rights fit for the reality of modern working, is not only good for employees but it’s good for business, and is part of getting our economy firing on all cylinders.

“Too many people in Britain spend their lives worrying about how many hours they’ll be given next week, what will happen if they need to attend a medical appointment or how they’ll pay the bills if they fall ill.

“Labour will give all working families the job and pay security they not only need, but deserve.”

Ahead of the speech, TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said the plans “would make a real difference to millions of workers.

“The [Covid-19] pandemic exposed the terrible working conditions that many in our labour market face — including our dedicated key workers. Everyone who works in Britain deserves to be treated with dignity.

“Labour have set out concrete plans to make working people better off. It’s a big contrast to this government’s record over the last 11 years.”
