SHARON GRAHAM will demand an end to the “abhorrence” of fire-and-rehire attacks on workers at the TUC’s annual congress today.
At the union confederation’s virtual event, the Unite union’s new leader is expected to slam the practice of forcing people to accept worse pay and working conditions as “one of the scandals of our age.”
She will call for support for Labour MP Barry Gardiner’s private member’s Bill to ban the tactic, while warning that many workers need help now.
“With Labour in opposition and a government reluctant to act, our response now must be industrial,” she is expected to argue. “No politician is coming to save us. Now is the time for trade unionism.
“No more political tail wagging the industrial dog. Instead, a simple pledge to our workers: trade unions that do what they say on the tin — fight for our jobs, for our pay and our conditions.
“It’s time for change. It’s time to rebuild the movement at the workplace.”
Ms Graham’s recent election was welcomed by TUC president Gail Cartmail in her address to congress today.
