Union praises local government workers in its first Champions Day

Former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston backs the public services union's new campaign

UNISON praised local government workers today as the public services union held its first Champions Day.

The event was organised to “celebrate and defend local government workers for the everyday heroes they are,” Unison stressed.

Up and down the country, workplaces organised coffee mornings and invited MPs to celebratory events which profiled the work of their “champions” in local news.

The union marked the launch of the initiative with a video featuring former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston interviewing rehabilitation worker Paddy Toner — winner of Unison’s Local Service Champions award 2021.

Mr Toner, of Halton in Cheshire, praised his colleagues for continuing to serve the community despite 12 years of crippling Tory austerity cuts to pay and services.

And Mr Eccleston shared his passion for local government staff, with the screen and stage actor stressing he is “keen to shine a light on the vital impact of these workers, which has been overlooked for so long.”
