University of Central Lancashire lecturers to take industrial action over job losses

LECTURERS at Preston-based University of Central Lancashire are to launch industrial action over job losses.

The University and College Union (UCU) said today that members had voted by 79 per cent for action, initially an overtime ban, over a threat to 67 jobs.

The planned redundancies come despite the university having already shed 200 staff through voluntary redundancies in the last 18 months, the UCU said.

UCU general secretary Jo Grady said: “The university needs to halt these cuts.

“It has already cut hundreds of staff over the past 18 months while seeing an increase in student numbers.

“And it talks about budget deficits while holding cash reserves of £100m and embarking on new building projects costing tens of millions of pounds.

“To destroy the livelihoods of staff who have kept the university going during the Covid-19 pandemic is spiteful and unnecessary.

“We now have a clear mandate for action, and we hope that the university ends the compulsory redundancies to prevent any further damage to its reputation.”

The university has been contacted for comment.
