YOUNG communists in London have met Cuban Ambassador Barbara Montalvo Alvarez at the Latin American country’s embassy to present her with a large stone artwork in an expression of solidarity and friendship.
The tablet featured the first sentence of Young Communist League’s constitution stylistically carved within it, reading: “The League member shall be a lover of freedom and an enemy of oppression and believe that real freedom is only possible under socialism.”
Ms Montalvo Alvarez said that the artwork was an “outstanding work of solidarity and friendship between the Young Communist League and the Cuban people.”
Embassy staff were in attendance for the meeting, which took place on Friday, before carrying the artwork away to find a permanent home for it within the building.
The visit follows the recent Young Trade Unionists’ May Day Brigade to Cuba earlier this year, organised by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign.
Members of the League and other activists travelled to explore the country, to participate in practical solidarity work, and to discover the reality of life for Cubans living under the United States’ blockade.
