Barbados elects first woman PM

BARBADOS has elected its first woman as prime minister in a historic vote after the Labour Party won the country’s general election for the first time since 2008.

Outgoing Democratic Labour Party (DLP) Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, who called the election in March, conceded defeat in the early hours of the morning.

The Barbados Labour Party election victory sees Mia Mottley become the country’s first woman prime minister since it gained independence from Britain in 1966.

She will be sworn in as head of the Barbados House of Assembly after the Barbados Labour Party completed a clean sweep, winning all 30-seats.

Ms Mottley fought the election on a promise to improve the cost of living for the people of Barbados and attacked the government on its policy of high taxation.

"I want to thank you the people in particular. This victory is not mine. This victory is not the Labour Party. This victory belongs to the people of Barbados,” she told supporters.
