Anna Lotterud — Anna of the North — has placed herself well and truly at the forefront of the electropop revival with her tour-de-force debut album Lovers.
Artists like Charli XCX and M.O are putting a different kind of pop back on the map and Lotterud is among those whose intelligent song-writing and effortless ability to turn a catchy tune proves the versatility of the genre.
Kitted out with inflatable exotic birds, the stage brings a taste of summer to the decidedly gloomy and bunker-like Village Underground venue and it’s there that, dressed in white, Lotterud treats her already dedicated fanbase to a complete run-through of Lovers plus a few new numbers.
The album’s theme to end all themes — love, naturally — is never anodyne and the rawness of emotion displayed by the 27-year-old demonstrates real maturity.
“I’m tired of being in love,” is the refrain on Always and Money is a lament on behalf of a man who apparently is with someone just after his cash, while Feels and Friends is as mournful as pop can be.
She’s as adept at producing a good hook as she’s as perceptive in her songwriting, particularly on the hugely buoyant chorus of Someone and latest single Leaning On Myself, with its indie-ish bass lick. There’s an acoustic version of Baby and Oslo, all glistening pop, is a tribute to her native country’s capital.
Breakthrough tune Sway, an internet hit in 2014 and instrumental in getting Lotterud a record deal, gets an airing and new tunes Used To Be and Thank Me Later give a taste of things to come.
She’s certainly setting the bar high.
