21ST-CENTURY POETRY Billion Dollar Brain

It all seemed crazy back in the smart,
sophisticated ’60s, just a tongue-in-cheek
spy caper: lunatic, religious Texan oil
tycoon waging war for freedom;
madcap plan to win Latvian
independence from Russia.
Porton is a little primitive for us…
we have our own viruses,
Brezhnev-lookalike Soviet spymaster
tells put-upon Harry Palmer.

How we laughed! More Marx Brothers
than Karl Marx. But for all Ken Russell’s jokes —
Thermos between Michael Caine’s legs,
Francoise Dorleac astride a cello,
a frozen stiff, Harry’s glasses steaming up
in the sauna — zany is mainstream
these days. Russia plots to recapture Latvia,
beware of Salisbury cathedral tourists,
while zombie comedy villain General Midwinter
regularly pontificates on Fox News
(I love the sound of gunfire!)
