“PAUL SUMMERS has managed to capture the spirit of the [Durham] Miners’ Gala and its central place in our movement’s mission to achieve victory for the many and not the few,” says no less a figure than Jeremy Corbyn of his illustrated poetry pamphlet “arise!”
Published by Culture Matters, it celebrates the rich history and traditions of the Gala and the resurgent spirit of socialism in the Labour Party.
Now there are plans to produce a “film-poem” of arise! which will, says Unite the Union’s director of education Jim Mowatt, “celebrate the rich history of miners and the collective spirit of the working class which lies at the heart of trade union history and which is vital to the future of the labour movement and the next Labour government.”
It’s attracted the support of film-maker Ken Loach, the Durham Miners’ Association, Unite and others in the labour movement as well as the Labour Party leader.
Combining film with poetry can be a powerful of tool in catalysing activism to ensure a Labour victory in the next general election and for this to happen Culture Matters needs a minimum of £1,500.
