MARIA DUARTE recommends a heartbreaking film about two young children from Africa, who must endure the inhumanity of Europe’s attitude to refugees
ALONE TOGETHER: (Left) Lokita (Joely Mbundi) and Tori (Pablo Schils)

Tori and Lokita (15)
Directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne
★★★★

WINNER of the 75th Anniversary Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the Dardenne brothers’ latest film about the struggles of two young African migrants battling to survive in Belgium humanises the plight of so-called “unaccompanied foreign minors” in this powerful and moving drama.

The film follows adolescent teen Lokita (Joely Mbundi) as she attempts to obtain residence papers, having to prove that 11-year-old Tori (Pablo Schils) — with whom she has travelled all the way from Africa — is her younger brother.
