Campaigners hit out at government inaction on climate change 100 days ahead of Cop26 talks

CAMPAIGNERS hit out at the British government’s inaction on climate change yesterday with only 100 days to go to crucial international Cop26 talks in Glasgow.

Ministers are being warned they must maximise diplomatic efforts as hosts to ensure the summit is successful, with calls for concrete action, funding to cut pollution and the halting of plans for new North Sea oil and gas exploration.

Campaigners accused PM Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak of being “missing in action” ahead of today’s planned protest in Parliament Square.

The Climate Coalition, an alliance of organisations, is calling for urgent restoration of the natural world, green jobs, unlocking money from wealthier countries to support poorer nations, and no new fossil fuel projects.

Ben Margolis, interim director of the group, said time was quickly running out, while Greenpeace’s Doug Parr said Britain needed to get its own house in order.

The calls come as Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken said her ambition is for the summit to create a lasting legacy for the city, unveiling a pilot scheme that aims to reduce the environmental impact of the city’s economy.
