Victory for striking Goldsmiths University workers will ‘set a marker’ across the country, Corbyn says at the picket line

VICTORY for striking workers at Goldsmiths University of London will “set a marker” for their peers across the country, Jeremy Corbyn said today.

Addressing about 500 staff and students at the University and College Union’s (UCU) end-of-strike party in Lewisham, the former Labour leader stressed that “[if] we win here, we win in the next place, we win in the place after that.”

The walkouts, which began on November 23 and are the longest in the union’s history, are part of its national campaign against cuts to jobs, pay and attacks on pensions in the marketised higher education system.

Under-pressure Goldsmiths bosses, who claim cuts are required as part of a loan deal with Lloyds and Natwest banks, have reduced the number of professional services positions at risk of compulsory redundancy from 32 to 17, the UCU said, but 20 academics still face the axe.

The history, English and creative writing departments are also under threat, campaigners warn, with another round of strike action likely from late January.

The UCU’s Marian Carty told the Morning Star: “We will carry on fighting, morale is high. We have justice on our side.”
