Trump demands ‘immediate release’ of Mar-a-Lago search warrant

FORMER US president Donald Trump has demanded the “immediate” release of the federal warrant that authorised an FBI search of his Florida palace.

The warrant was sealed, meaning that its contents remain confidential, as is usual pending an investigation, but the Justice Department asked a court to unseal it on Thursday, citing “substantial public interest.”

Publication could be embarrassing for Mr Trump if the warrant contains a detailed factual basis for searching his property. A judge must have been convinced by the FBI that “probable cause exists to believe that a crime was committed.”

But Mr Trump’s defiant call for publication to be accelerated aims at assuring supporters that he believes the search was unjustified and part of political persecution designed to stop him returning to the White House. He hinted last month that he plans to stand again, using a Washington speech to reiterate his baseless claim that he won the 2020 election but was cheated of the presidency.

The search on August 8 was part of an ongoing investigation into classified government documents previously discovered at Mr Trump’s private residence.
