Racing A different board game for Chessman at Ascot

THERE are some very tempting big field handicaps tomorrow afternoon, none more so than the International at Ascot due off at 3.00 and I am going to wade in with a big each-way nap here in the form of Chessman (NAP).

Archie Watson is fast becoming a trainer to have onside, especially with his juveniles and this lightly raced son of Acclamation has been threatening to win a race of this ilk for some time.

His run last time out in a Listed contest showed his turn was close at hand and, if you think back to last year when he ran in the Jersey Stakes here at Ascot and was only beaten seven lengths by Le Brivido, then his chance is there for all to see off a mark of 95 with the in-form Oisin Murphy on board.

Of course he will hopefully be where the pace is here drawn on the stands’ side in stall 28, but there are also plenty of other fancied horses on his side of the track. The prevailing fast ground is perfect for him and I think that he is way overpriced at around the 25/1 mark.

Others worth a second look include Ultimate Avenue at 33/1 (6f too short for him in the Wokingham Handicap) and at a shorter price both Makseem and Firmament.

The big race of the day is of course the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at 3.40 and the lack of a good class three-year-old is glaring to see.

Sir Michael Stoute has a hold on the market here with Crystal Ocean and Poet’s Word and slight preference is for the former who looks the stronger stayer and will relish the faster ground. I have to admit I thought he took an age to engage top gear when he won the Hardwicke at Royal Ascot, but he is almost certainly better than that run and I hope he can prove it here.

Later on the card, the big lady amateur rider’s event at 4.50 can be landed by Robero.

He has recently been transferred to the Gay Kelleway yard with new owners but has the class to win this. On his best form, Gay has him ready to start off following a break and I have no reason to believe he won’t be for this valuable affair.

The finale at 5.20 can go to DARK PEARL who has slowly been running into form and looks well-weighted here.

The Skybet Dash (2.40 at York) looks a real head scratcher of a six furlong sprint handicap but I am hopeful that Holmeswood can go well for the shrewd Michael Dods.

This relatively lightly raced four-year-old has got himself nicely handicapped again off a mark of 92 and has run well here before dead-heating over five furlongs last year off the same rating. This extra furlong seems to suit him better nowadays and he is now 5lbs lower than at the start of the campaign.

Later on that evening, my second best bet of the day goes at Lingfield Park where Fanoulpifer (nb) should take all the beating in the opener at the Surrey track at 5.30. He looked a bit unlucky here a couple of races ago and should be able to give the weight away to Moonlight Silver and company.

At Salisbury, have a second look at both Warmhearted in the 5.15 and also Spot Lite at 6.45.

The last named has been running well season and has kept his form well. He will be well suited to the end-to-end gallop here.
