Greenpeace defy port authorities and sail down the Clyde towards Cop26

GREENPEACE sailed a ship down the River Clyde today towards the Cop26 conference despite being refused permission by port authorities to dock there.

The Rainbow Warrior vessel is carrying four youth activists from Mexico, Bangladesh, Uganda and Namibia, who are demanding their voices be heard at the global summit.

Port authorities declined permission for the yacht to dock outside the conference centre, which is under a strict lockdown, with Scotland Police now controlling the River Clyde.

But Greenpeace announced on Sunday that the crew had decided to ignore the refusal and would press on with the journey from Liverpool to Glasgow.

The four say they are now more determined to reach the summit.

Farzana Faruk Jumu, a 22-year-old Bangladeshi activist, said: “We’re here to be heard, not cause trouble, and my friends and I are sailing to the climate summit whether they like it or not.

“Our message, our voice, our presence is too important for us to turn back now.”

An online tracker showed the ship had reached Gourok, 30 miles from Glasgow, this afternoon.
