England Under-17s clash with Venezuela marred by ‘disturbing reports of racism’

THE FA has confirmed “disturbing reports of racism” towards England players during Wednesday’s twice-halted under-17s match against Venezuela.

Liam Bramley’s Young Lions are in Germany to play a mini tournament as they gear up for next month’s European Championship qualifiers in Lithuania.

England won their opening match 2-1 against Venezuela but the game in Duisburg was marred by allegations of racism, which PA understands involved language used on the field.

The match report published by the FA report confirmed that “the game was halted twice, with a lengthy delay in the second half as the referee dealt with the incidents.”

An FA spokesperson said: “We are aware of disturbing reports of racism towards England players at our MU17 match against Venezuela played in Germany [on Wednesday].

“This is being treated with the utmost seriousness and our priority is to support our players and staff.

“We are in ongoing discussions with tournament organisers and the relevant authorities about next steps.”

England are due to play Israel tomorrow, before rounding off the mini tournament against hosts Germany on Tuesday.
