European unions call for solidarity ahead of Turkish health workers union officials' trial

THE European Public Service Unions Federation (EPSU) issued a call for solidarity on Thursday ahead of the trial in Turkey next week of officials from the Health and Social Service Workers’ Union (SES).

The call by EPSU, which represents around eight million public service workers across Europe, comes ahead of the trial of members and executives of the SES, which is set to take place on October 2.

A statement from EPSU demanded that “the juridical authorities drop all the charges” and called for its affiliates to join them in showing solidarity with SES officials.

In May 2021 police carried out a dawn raid against the SES and arrested officials Selma Atabey and Gonul Erden.

Both were accused of terrorism, but the unions believe that both officials were arrested because of their trade union activities.

Ms Erden, former chair of the SES, was sent to prison in September 2021 but released after a hearing in March of this year.

Ms Atabey, current women’s secretary, was arrested in July 2022 and released almost a year later.

EPSU members are planning to post messages of solidarity on social media platforms during the trial of the union officials using the hashtag #SolidarityWithSES, tagging Turkey’s Minister of Justice Yilmaz Tunc.
