THE Feminist Library in London launched an urgent appeal yesterday as it faces closure after more than four decades if £30,000 for a new home is not raised.
The volunteer-run library will be forced to leave its current premises next spring as the site in Westminster Bridge Road is due for redevelopment.
Southwark Council has offered a new building to rent in Peckham, but the library needs the cash to help fit out the new space, move thousands of books and legal costs.
Feminist Library collective member Madga Oldziejewska said: “The Feminist Library has survived for 43 years by the goodwill and passion of our dedicated volunteers and supporters, and with next to no governmental or external funding.
“We are now counting on the community’s support to make this move happen.”
The library has changed location many times over the years, but the collective say they have never had a “stable and adequate” space.
In 2016, members faced eviction after Southwark Council threatened to rise their rent, but was able to fight back with support from national and international public.
The proposed new space is part of the Sojourner Truth Community Centre — named after the famous African-American activist and abolitionist — and is large enough for the collective to host events and expand their programme.
Volunteer Anna Pigott said: “We hope to take this opportunity to make the library an even more accessible and inclusive feminist space than it has been so far, by welcoming the local community and meeting our new neighbours.”
Donors to the campaign will receive various rewards from tote bags and limited edition prints to having their name engraved on a shelf.
The fundraiser closes on December 9. To donate, visit mstar.link/2yhZVzU.
