WEST HAM were thoroughly out-thought and outfought by a resolute Everton, who took all three points at the London Stadium.
The two sides largely cancelled each other out in an uninspiring first half.
West Ham’s best effort came when Luis Paqueta knocked the ball over the defender to cross for Jarrod Bowen, who fired wide.
There were warning signs, though, for the home side when a misunderstanding between Paqueta and Aaron Cresswell saw the resulting shot saved low down by Alphonse Areola.
After the break, Bowen headed over a James Ward-Prowse free kick.
Three minutes later the ball fell to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who turned his defender to fire home.
Everton should then have doubled the lead when Abdoulaye Doucoure got away but Areola was able to push the resulting shot wide.
Areola then had to push a Dwight McNeil effort over.
Calvert-Lewin should then have made the points safe when he got away but the resulting shot cannoned back off the underside of the bar.
Everton keeper Jordan Pickford made two outstanding point-blank saves to deny Mohammed Kudus and Said Benrahma.
West Ham manager David Moyes was concerned his side had created fewer chances in the past couple of games and those they did were not taken.
“We had more of the ball today but were unable to open Everton up and make chances, said Moyes. “Jarrod had a couple of half-chances.”
Everton manager Sean Dyche reflected on a tough week for Everton, with the loss of chairman Bill Kenwright.
He welcomed, though, the return to form of striker Calvert-Lewin, after a tough couple of years. His winner was the striker’s 50th Premier League goal. “It is frustrating we’ve not got more points on the board,” said Dyche.
