A MEMORIAL sculpture honouring an “exceptional” mental health nurse who lost his life to Covid-19 has been unveiled by his widow and two youngest sons.
The tribute to Grant Maganga is situated in Tameside General Hospital’s Buckton Building garden, next to the Hurst Place mental health rehabilitation unit where he worked for a decade.
It has an inscription which commemorates Mr Maganga as “our wonderful colleague and friend” and extends the tribute to all NHS workers who lost their lives during the pandemic.
His widow, Awa Bojang, said: “Grant was taken from us at a time when we needed him the most. I am grateful for the support we received.”
Unison, Mr Maganga’s union, is planning to establish a permanent memorial to all those in the north-west of England who lost their lives during the Covid crisis.
A Unison spokesman said the event provided a poignant moment to remember his significant contributions to his family, colleagues and patients.
