Men's Football Hughes making wholesale changes for Everton match after Saints lose to Wolves

SOUTHAMPTON manager Mark Hughes will ring the changes for his side’s trip to Everton in the the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday night.

‏The Saints’ disappointing start to the season continued yesterday with a 2-0 defeat to Wolves at Molineux thanks to second-half goals from Ivan Cavaleiro, who scored with his first touch in the Premier League after returning from a back injury, and Jonny Castro.

‏After the game Hughes said he would be looking to give starts to some of his fringe players when they face the Toffees at Goodison Park on Tuesday.

‏“We’ll make changes,” said the Welshman. “We made changes against Brighton [in the second round] and put out a really good performance and a number of those players made a claim and are pushing themselves more into my thinking.

‏“I’m fully expect that a number of the players that will play on Tuesday will do the same, but that’s up to them. They need to show me they are able to help us.

‏“They’re all good players and some of them have been disappointed. It’s been a bit unfair to them, they haven’t done anything wrong, but we’ve got a fully fit squad that I can’t pick everybody.

‏“We’ve got about 24 of the 25 named squad fit and ready to go, so somebody has got to miss out. But the majority of the players will play on Tuesday and we’ll see how they go.”

‏The loss to Wolves leaves Southampton with just one win to show from their opening seven matches.

‏And Hughes is hoping that the players who do feature tomorrow will make a claim for a start in the next league game at home to Chelsea on Sunday and hopefully kick-start the South Coast club’s season.

‏He said: “I think, clearly, we haven’t won as many games as we wanted to up to this point. So they will feel, and I will feel, that there’s an opportunity or a feeling that the team can be improved because somebody has shown some good endeavour and good play and a desire to get back into the team. Then I’ll consider that.”
