Gaelic football Local Sports Clubs show solidarity with Palestine before final

TODMORROW two community Gaelic football teams plan to come together to make a powerful show of solidarity with Palestine before their keenly anticipated cup final.

The delayed 2023 Scottish Intermediate final of traditional Irish sport Gaelic football will be contested between fierce rivals Dalriada CLG of Aberdeen/Dundee and Tir Chonaill Harps of Glasgow. Both clubs are constituted primarily of recent immigrants and members of the Irish diaspora.

The squads will be putting sporting ambition and antagonisms aside however to add their voices to the ever-growing list of community organisations speaking out against the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Taking inspiration from the Gaels Against Genocide grassroots initiative in Ireland, which has seen participation from high-profile teams such as the Dublin Ladies, both clubs aim to bring this movement across the water to Britain for the first time.

Speaking ahead of the game, Dalriada club member Cathal O Gaillin, who organised the action along with fellow Dalriada player Daire Magorrian, had this to say: “With our shared histories of oppression, genocide and erasure it’s logical our solidarity goes out to Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank and across 1948 Palestine. Given the significance of this Scottish final we felt it important to make a public stand and expression of this solidarity.

“The struggle must extend into all spheres of life including the cultural and the sporting. We encourage any other team thinking about doing similar to follow suit at the local, national or international level, as well as to maintain the boycott of complicit companies such as sport brand Puma.”

The game throws in at 3.15pm at Clydebank Community Sportshub and is available to watch live on YouTube.
