Mexicans mark further decline of critically endangered vaquita

CONSERVATIONISTS marched through Mexico City at the weekend to highlight the plight of a porpoise on the brink of extinction.

The number of vaquita porpoises has now fallen below 30. Since the probable extinction of the Yangtze river dolphin, or baiji, in 2006, the vaquita is now considered the most endangered member of the whale family. Its numbers are being decimated by nets set for catching totoaba fish.

Marchers beat drums and bore a carved representation of a vaquita skull.
